If each of us reduced the refuse that goes into black bags by just 15%, Essex would save over 100 thousand tonnes of landfill waste each year.

Every new product we purchase requires resources and energy to produce and transport – which almost always means significant carbon emissions. We each generate 465 KG of waste per year, recycling just over half of that.

We should consider what we are buying before making that purchase. Things we can think about when purchasing items include:

  • Can it be recycled?

  • Can it be repaired?

  • Has it been produced locally, meaning transportation is minimal?

Reducing single-use items

Single-use items contribute significantly to waste in Essex. Having a reusable alternative can cut your environmental impact.

Each 500ml plastic bottle emits almost 83g of CO2. A single reusable bag has the potential to save nearly 800 plastic bags per year. Reusing not only cuts carbon emissions but also reduces litter and saves money!

When you cannot reuse an item but can recycle it, ensure it is clean and dry. Non-recyclable items that are placed in your recycling bin or sack can cause issues during the recycling process.
