Essex residents urged to “think outside the car this summer”

Campaign will highlight why we should all be embracing active travel and help make Essex safer, greener and healthier.

With the school holidays upon us, the sustainable transport team at Essex County Council (ECC) are urging residents to “think outside the car” this summer.

The social media campaign will feature trips and events which can easily be reached by bike, on foot or by public transport as well as highlighting all the exciting sustainable transport initiatives currently running across the county.

Primary School ‘Climate Crew Clubs’ awarded Essex Climate Action Challenge Fund grant

Funding will be used to help inspire young climate activists by running free workshops at primary schools in Essex.

Communities and environmental charity Groundwork East has been awarded an Essex Climate Action Challenge Fund grant of £19,506 by Essex County Council with the support of the Essex Climate Action Commission (ECAC).

The grant funding will help inspire young climate activists by running ‘Climate Crew Clubs’ for 7 to 11-year-olds at nine primary schools and one home-school cohort in Essex.

Essex Climate Action Commission Celebrates Essex Schools Green Day

The Essex Schools Green Day is taking place today, on July 6.

The annual event was hosted for the first time last year and is for schools across the county to learn and take action about protecting the natural environment. It is hosted by the Multi Schools Council. Both primary and secondary schools, county-wide, are taking part.

The Multi-Schools Council and the Essex Climate Action Commission will be providing support to schools for this event, including a range of in-person support, teaching resources and more specifically, the Schools Climate Action Advice Packs.

All aboard the county’s first ever Climate Awareness Train!

The Essex Climate Action Commission teamed up with Essex & South Suffolk Community Rail Partnership to inspire the next generation of environment enthusiasts with the county’s first ever Climate Awareness Train on Sunday 22 May.

Developed alongside Essex County Council and Greater Anglia, the Climate Awareness Train has been created to help families understand local climate issues and ignite a passion for protecting our planet. The special event was also supported by Essex Forest Initiative, which pledged to plant a tree for each passenger aboard the train.

Essex County Council has this week outlined the action it has taken, and continues to take, to create a better future for all county residents.

At a Full Council meeting of Essex County Council, Leader Cllr Kevin Bentley set out the action the council cabinet took within its first 100 days of being elected in May 2021. Cllr Bentley then outlined the council’s ongoing Everyone’s Essex strategy for the future.

A new review identifying the green skills opportunities in Essex has been published by Essex County Council (ECC).

The County Council appointed Mace Group to conduct a review of the county’s green skills, as recommended by the independent Essex Climate Action Commission.

Running of recycling centres to be brought in-house as Essex County Council builds a service fit for the future

Recycling centres and waste transfer stations in Essex will soon be operated directly by ECC, delivering a high quality, customer focused and sustainable service, which offers value for money to taxpayers.

Today (Friday 1st April), Veolia staff at ECC’s recycling centres and waste transfer stations have moved to being directly employed by the County Council, following a consultation with employees and the GMB Union.
